Christine Kinsey is an artist, author, curator and co-founder of Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff. She has developed a group of women characters who inhabit her drawings, paintings and film. They reflect the poverty caused by the discrimination against women while growing up in the industrial valleys of southeast Wales. This experience together with Cymreictod, an exploration of the culture of Wales and the Welsh language, form a backdrop against which each character enacts a role. Her images incorporate symbols and motifs which reinterpret the traditional symbolic representation of women in western Christian visual culture to reveal the characters continuing search to become the subject and not the object of the image. Her aim is to bear witness to the continuing exploitation women experience and to support a way of having all our voices heard.
